When Should You Use Base64 Images?

Base64 encoding converts binary image data into ASCII strings, making it possible to embed images directly within HTML documents or CSS stylesheets. This reduces HTTP request overhead for tiny graphic assets like icons, logos, and spinners.

Note on File Size: Base64 encoded strings are roughly 33% larger than raw binary files. For large photographs, standard image formats (JPEG/WebP) are recommended.

How to use Base64 to Image & Image to Base64

Choose an image to create a data URL, or paste an image data URL to preview and download its contents. Copy the result into your HTML or CSS as needed.

What to check before using the result

Base64 increases file size by roughly one third. Large embedded images can make documents slower to load.

Example: Embedding a small icon

Encode a small PNG to obtain a data URL beginning with data:image/png;base64,. Use that value as an image source or CSS background. Larger images are usually easier to cache and reuse as separate files.
